Role of Nasib Sangha for the protection & preservation of Paraura Hill

Introduction

Assam Mahila Samata Society, Dhubri District Implementation Unit has been working since 1997 to empower the rural & economically backward women. Mahila Samakhya programme under the Ministry of Human Resource Development has already implemented in six development blocks. It has covered 357 revenue villages in 35 panchayats. After the implementation of this programme a remarkable change as well as progress has seen in the field of education, health sector, and economic development.

Now they are aware about their rights and duties, gender equality etc. Mahila Samakhya have been working for the preservation of natural resources, to stop environment pollution.

Sixty sangha women of "Nasib Sangha" of Futkibari panchayat under Bilasipara block has been working for the preservation of "PARAURA HILL". They have been able to preserve the valuable forests. The sangha women have regularly guarded the whole area.

Steps of Sangha women for the preservation of Paraura Pahar:

Paraura hill is located hear the village voishpara in Futkibari panchayat under Bilasipara block. The Bodo people mainly inhabit the hill. The people have collected firewood from the hill. Most of the valuable trees have been already destructed.

Sixty Sangha women of "Nashib Mahila Sangha(formed in 1999)" have discussed the whole matter and take decision to preserve the hill.

The discussion are given below:

  1. They have decided to guard the hill from 7a.m. to 12 noon in the morning and 1PM to 5PM in the evening.
  2. During rainy season all women have not been able to equally involved. For that period they have engaged two women for the same purpose.
  3. They have also decided to give Rs. 300/- pm to the women who will guard the hill during the month of Ahar, Saun and Bhada. They have decided to give the money from their "Sangha Puji" (Savings).

Networking with the forest Department:

Sangha women have already given an application to Mr. Nripen Das, a Forester of department of forest. They have urged to take immediate step for the preservation ofv the area. The Sangha women have organized a meeting and discuss the whole mater. But the concerned Department did not take any step.


Naba Kumar chetia Memorial Sector:

" Tezpur Environmental Awareness Organization" (Tezpur poribes , Xojagota Sangstha") has announced an award to encourage the Activist for the preservation of forest as well as to promote the this society has introduced the award in the membry of Late Naba Kumar Chetia, former DC of Sonitpur District.

The committee has decided to introduce the prize in all Assam basis from 2006. This year "Nasib Sangha" in Futkibari panchayat , Dhubri District Implementation Unit, AMSS has been selected for the prestigious Naba Kumar Chetia memorial award. This award was presented in a formal function held in 17th December'06 in Tezpur. The meeting was chaired by Kamal Kr. Goswami, DC, Sonitpur District. Distinguish guests Dr. Lakshmi Goswami, Madhumita Bhagawati, Parimal Bhattacharya attended the meeting. The award was presented by Sanjukta Chetia, daughter of Late Naba Kumar Chetia.

Application for Naba Kumar Chetia Memorial Award:

" Nasib Sangha" of Futkibari panchayat applied for the Award according to advertisement published in Amar Asom, a local daily newspaper.

Discussion with the neighbouring villages:

Members of "Nasib Sangha" discussed with neighbouring villagers about the preservation of valuable forests. As per discussion with the Bodo people of neighbouring Malagori village decided to work for the preservation of the hill.

After that Dilip Basumatary of Malguri village cut 52(Saltrees) and Swarna Bodo cut 20 Saltrees fro that hill. After knowing the incident Sangha women met the person and request them not to cut such valuable trees. Sangha women also told them that such kind of activities are completely illegal accordingly "Environment preservation Act". The persons promised to the Sangha women that they will not involve with such like activities again.

All the sangha women of Voishpara Sangha are ready to guard the hill at any time except the rainy season. The total land of the forest is 50 bighas.
